Ori Kam to Depart the Jerusalem Quartet in October 2025
I would like to share that as of October 2025, I will no longer be the violist of the Jerusalem Quartet.
From a very young age, playing string quartets was my greatest wish. To have the chance to do this professionally, at the highest level imaginable, has been nothing short of a dream come true. I will always remain deeply grateful for this privilege.
The past years have brought enormous pressures to the Quartet. Covid, wars, travel disruptions, and a rapidly changing musical landscape have widened existing fissures among us, making it harder to sustain a common musical and professional vision. At the same time, changes in my personal life and new professional opportunities have made it clear that the moment has come for me to move on.
There are many people I wish to thank. While the Quartet is the visible part of the machine, countless others make our work possible. I am especially grateful to our management teams: Impressariat Simmenauer in Berlin — particularly Sonia Simmenauer, Lenemarie Leukefeld — and David Rowe in the U.S., whose support and guidance have been invaluable. I will also greatly miss working with Marjon at IVY Artists, Lorenzo Baldrighi, and Jacinto in Duetto management.
I am indebted as well to the many concert presenters around the world who trusted us, welcomed us back regularly, and allowed us to build lasting relationships with their audiences. I remain in awe of the immense work it takes to create and sustain a concert series, and I look forward to continuing to see many of these presenters, even if not as often.
For me, a concert does not exist on stage alone but in the space between stage and audience. In an era where true listening is increasingly rare, the fact that audiences take time from their lives to offer us their undivided attention feels nothing short of miraculous. I am humbled by these experiences. Performing for such audiences has been the greatest learning journey I could have imagined.
Finally, I wish to express my gratitude to my three colleagues, who invited me to join the Quartet and from whom I have learned so much. Their deep commitment to the music and to the audience has always been the heart of this ensemble. The Quartet will soon announce my successor, and I am certain that whoever steps in will bring a new and wonderful chapter to its history. I know that the Jerusalem Quartet will continue to bring the great string quartet repertoire to life for audiences worldwide, upholding the tradition we love and revere. From now on, I will have the privilege of experiencing this from the other side of the stage.
